Spectacular Shetland

Allison Sanders • 30 October 2020

Since 2016 we have been running scenic tours to the northernmost islands in Great Britain. Indeed, Shetland is closer than you think; just a train ride to Aberdeen along the East Coast Main Line and then an overnight ferry with NorthLink to Lerwick. Naturally, we take things a bit more casually and well-paced, giving you time to see the Granite City of Aberdeen for an overnight stay on the outward journey and historic St. Andrew's for one night at a fancy boutique hotel on the way back. Additional bonus attractions on the Scottish mainland include steam at the Caledonian Railway of Brechin and Robert Falcon Scott's arctic vessel RRS Discovery in Dundee.

Here are just a few images to capture the glory of these fine destinations in their own right.

Of course, the main purpose of our "Shetlander" holiday is Shetland itself and we spend 3 nights at a cozy waterfront inn in the capital Lerwick. Often described as a mixture between Scotland and Scandinavia, you can discover the delights of this remote and rugged, yet evocative and engaging island location. Without exaggeration, Shetland is just as breathtaking as Skye, but more of a 'best kept secret'. Stunning natural sites and highlights on our tour are the Cliffs of Eshaness in the north of the mainland, St. Ninian's Isle on the west coast and Sumburgh Head lighthouse with puffin colony in the south. Historic sites such as Scalloway Castle and the Jarlshof viking site also feature in our programme, as do the Broch of Clickimin and Fort Charlotte in Lerwick. These short films provide a synopsis of Shetland's remarkable landscape and inspiring nature.

For an amazing getaway that features the best of Scotland and has a distinctively Nordic flavour, look no further than Shetland! Alone the sandy beaches of St. Ninian's Isle are worth it!

See you in Shetland!
