This summer and autumn, take a classic rail journey along The Settle and Carlisle line, one of Britain’s most impressive railway routes. With dramatic climbs, towering viaducts, and wide views of the Pennine landscape, these day trips offer a memorable way to experience some of Britain’s most iconic rail scenery.

With two different trips to choose from - The Waverley and The Cumbrian Mountain Express - and several dates available, it’s a great opportunity to explore this historic line.

The Waverley  – Sundays:  3 August,  17 August &  7 September

Travel over the legendary Settle & Carlisle line, renowned for its steep climbs, dramatic viaducts, and wide Pennine views. The 3 August departure is hauled by the famous A1 Class 60163 Tornado, one of the most advanced steam locomotives ever built in the UK, combining modern engineering with classic design.

Departing from York and picking up passengers through the Aire Valley, the train joins the scenic Settle and Carlisle Line at Settle Junction, before beginning the long ascent to Ais Gill Summit. Highlights include the iconic Ribblehead Viaduct and a pass through Dent - the highest open station in England.

There’s a two-hour stop in Carlisle to explore the city’s cathedral, castle, or shops before heading back along the same spectacular route.

This is a perfect choice for anyone looking for an authentic steam train day trip with exceptional scenery.

The Cumbrian Mountain Express  – Saturdays:  2 August &  11 October

This circular steam tour begins with electric traction along the West Coast Main Line before switching to steam at Carnforth. The steam locomotive then takes the train north to Carlisle, passing over the northern fells.

After a two-hour stop in Carlisle, the return journey follows the full length of the Settle & Carlisle Railway, climbing through valleys and over the famous Ribblehead Viaduct. This route offers fantastic views of the surrounding hills and classic railway architecture, making for a wonderful steam train experience.

Whether you're a rail enthusiast or simply curious to explore the countryside by train, these day trips are a fantastic way to enjoy the landscapes and engineering of The Settle and Carlisle Line. Seats are limited – book now.
