An opportunity to travel by charter train diesel hauled train from the Midlands and Bristol area to the Royal Duchy of Cornwall, visiting the popular seaside resort of Newquay. From your reserved seat, sit back and watch the scenery go by as we traverse the Somerset Levels, the famous Dawlish Sea Wall, the South Devon Banks and the famous navel town of Plymouth before entering Cornwall.
Our train will commence its journey at Dorridge in the West Midlands with two class 47 heritage diesels and continue to Birmingham Snow Hill, where we will pause to pick up passengers. We will take the 'Jewellery Line' through the industrialised West Midlands to Stourbridge Junction, our next pick up station served by a large car park. Next pick up is Kidderminster, home to the Severn Valley Railway. We will make our way via Droitwich to then pick up in Worcester Shrub Hill station, before joining the Bristol line and then head toward Cheltenham Spa. After the Cheltenham pick up stop, we then call at Cam & Dursley and Bristol Parkway to pick up, before reaching our final calling station of Bristol Temple Meads.
Our journey southwards continues over the pleasant Somerset Levels through Bridgewater to Exeter, an historic city overlooked by its splendid cathedral. The Exe Estuary is then followed as far as Dawlish where we meet up with the ocean to run along the famous Dawlish Sea Wall. After Newton Abbot, the gradient increases dramatically as we tackle the arduous South Devon banks of Dainton and Rattery. Views along the edge of Dartmoor lead to Plymouth, famous for its navel bases and maritime heritage centered around the historic Barbican district.
After Plymouth, we will cross the Tamar on the Royal Albert Bridge of 1859, engineered by Isambard Kingdom Brunel, and it is one of the greatest bridges in the world. Now in Cornwall, the railway line twists and turns frequently as we pass over many viaducts as we run through Liskeard and Lostwithiel to Par, the junction station for the Newquay branch. The branch line passes through the attractive Luxulyan valley, with glimpses of the many china clay mounds that are scattered around this area. Our arrival at Newquay will allow time to visit this vibrant seaside destination, with its well known surfing beaches from the Atlantic Ocean. The town has many attractions, including a zoo, and the Pentire Headland to explore, along with numerous cafes, bars and restaurants. The station is conveniently located opposite the Great Western beach right in the town centre.
Our return journey will retrace our earlier route back to Dorridge, calling at our earlier pick up stations to set down.
