The Cumbrian Coast Express

Saturday 3 April 2027

Our journey combines the dramatic scenery of the Cumbrian Fells with the spectacular coastline that skirts the western edge of the Lake District. We travel north from London Euston behind our distinctive blue Class 86 electric locomotive before enjoying a memorable steam-hauled journey along one of Britain's most scenic coastal railway routes.

Book Now

We leave London Euston and head north along the West Coast Main Line, calling at Milton Keynes, Rugby, Nuneaton, Crewe and Preston to collect passengers. Continuing north through Lancaster, we skirt the shores of Morecambe Bay before arriving at Carnforth, where our steam locomotive takes over for the scenic journey along the Cumbrian Coast.

Leaving Carnforth, we pass the famous Brief Encounter café before continuing towards Arnside, where we cross Kent Viaduct with views across the estuary. Our journey takes us through Grange-over-Sands before crossing the Leven Viaduct and continuing through Ulverston and Dalton-in-Furness. We then travel via Kirkby-in-Furness and Millom, following the spectacular Cumbrian coastline with sweeping views of tidal estuaries, rugged shores and the distant Lakeland Fells as we make our way to Ravenglass.

At Ravenglass, we have arranged a special private charter on the delightful Ravenglass and Eskdale Railway, affectionately known as La'al Ratty. This charming narrow-gauge railway winds its way through the beautiful Eskdale Valley, offering wonderful views of the surrounding countryside. Alternatively, passengers may choose an optional excursion to historic Muncaster Castle, renowned for its beautiful gardens and magnificent setting.

Following our visit to Ravenglass, we rejoin our steam-hauled train for the return journey along the stunning Cumbrian Coast. From Millom, we follow the sweeping Duddon Estuary through Foxfield and Kirkby-in-Furness before continuing through Ulverston and crossing the Leven Viaduct. We then skirt the shores of Morecambe Bay through Grange-over-Sands and cross the lengthy Kent Viaduct at Arnside, enjoying further splendid coastal views as we approach Carnforth.

Here, we bid farewell to our gallant steam locomotive as our blue Class 86 electric locomotive takes over for a fast run south along the West Coast Main Line to London Euston. We call at the same stations as on the outward journey to set down passengers, bringing a memorable day of steam travel and spectacular Cumbrian scenery to a close.
