48151 8F
LMS Stanier Class 2-8-0
48151 was built by the London, Midland and Scottish Railway (LMS) at Crewe Works in 1945 as part of Sir William Stanier’s highly successful 8F Class of heavy freight locomotives.
Designed to handle demanding freight duties throughout Britain, No. 48151 spent its working life operating across the LMS network and later British Railways, hauling heavy goods trains over a wide range of routes. Following nationalisation in 1948, the locomotive continued to provide reliable service for British Railways, becoming a typical example of one of the most important freight locomotive classes ever built in Britain.
No. 48151 was withdrawn from service in 1968, towards the end of steam operations on British Railways, and was subsequently sold to Woodham Brothers scrapyard at Barry, South Wales. Like many other locomotives rescued from Barry, 48151 avoided scrapping and was purchased for preservation, leaving the scrapyard in 1975.
Following restoration, the locomotive returned to steam and has since operated on a number of heritage railways across the country. In addition to its heritage railway work, No. 48151 has also appeared on the national network, hauling main line railtours and recreating the heavy freight duties for which the class became famous. Today, 48151 remains one of the few operational Stanier 8Fs, serving as a lasting reminder of the vital role these locomotives played in Britain's railway history.
