You will have the option of alighting at York, to visit the Christmas festivities and market there, or at Durham or there will be time in Newcastle to visit the sights before we return south. Why not visit Newcastle Castle or The High Level Bridge, one of very few combined road and rail bridges in the UK and a Grade 1 listed structure.

We will make our way northwards steam hauled from London King’s Cross, hauled as far as York by the A1 class steam locomotive No. 60163 Tornado. We will make convenient pickup calls at Stevenage and Peterborough before reaching York for our locomotive changeover.

Our steam hauled journey continues from the historic city of York, hauled by 60009 Union of South Africa. Heading north away from York, we will head down the East Coast main line through to Northallerton, where 60009 Union of South Africa will build up speed to its maximum on the straight alignment of the tracks. We will pause at Durham momentarily to set down passengers who wish to spend the day in this World Heritage city, before heading towards Tyneside and over the river Tyne to Newcastle, our destination for today.

Apart from its reputation as a major shopping centre of the area, there are a number of cultural attractions to visit in Newcastle, including the Castle that overlooks the station, the riverside walks under the bridges, Grey’s Monument on Grey Street and St Nicholas cathedral.
The central location of the proposed Christmas Market makes it the perfect pit stop on a shopping trip. Enjoy some exotic meats from around the world, Italian chocolate treats, flavoured coffee or a continental beer in the purpose built bar. Get your Christmas underway at the Newcastle Christmas Market.

Whilst passengers pay a visit the city, Union of South Africa will be serviced for the return journey back to York. We will return south with Union of South Africa and follow our outward route. In no time at all, after picking up in Durham, we will be back at York. Here, we change steam locomotives again to 60163 Tornado for the run back to London King’s Cross, stopping as outward to set down passengers.

Look out for Father Christmas and his Elves who will be visiting the train during the day and handing out presents to all children on board. Please let us know your child’s age when booking.

Mulled wine and mince pies will be served to the first and standard class passengers on board.
