Join us on this seasonal train that will leave London Paddington early on Tuesday morning for the scenic journey to Bath and Cardiff for their festive Christmas Markets.
The markets, with their many stalls and food outlets, are located centrally within easy walking distance from the railway stations. With ample time to explore the markets and the attractions of both cities, what better way is there to ease you into the Christmas spirit than by a special steam hauled train.
We depart from London Paddington steam hauled by Princess Coronation class No.46233 Duchess of Sutherland and make our way along the Great Western
Railway main line. We pick up at Slough and then make our way to Reading where we pick up further passengers.
Following the Berks & Hants line, we follow the valley of the river Kennet through to Newbury, passing the racecourse before our final pick up station. At Hungerford, we leave the Kennet behind and follow the Kennet & Avon canal through the Savernake Forest. The gradient steepens for the long climb to Savernake Summit before we enter the attractive Vale of Pewsey and head for Westbury. Approaching Westbury, we pass the famous White Horse carved in the chalk of the hillside.
Taking the Avon Valley, we encounter pretty Cotswold stone villages as we pass through Trowbridge and Bradford on Avon. The Dundas Canal Aqueduct spans the Kennet and Avon canal as we head for the city of Bath. You have a choice of alighting at Bath for the Christmas Market, or continue to Cardiff. The city of Bath has many fine buildings, including the Abbey, Roman Baths, Poultney Bridge over the Avon and numerous buildings built with the attractive Bath stone. The Christmas Market is located around the historic centre of Bath, close by its Abbey and the Roman Baths. The numerous stalls will display local crafts and seasonal goods all to tempt you. Bath also has a varied range of quality shops in addition to the seasonal fare.
Our special train will continue steam hauled via the Severn Tunnel to Cardiff, where you will be able to visit the Christmas Market here. This well established Christmas Market, sited in the heart of Cardiff City Centre, has over 200 individual stalls selling a wide variety of diverse arts and crafts interspersed with seasonal food and drink.
Late afternoon your steam hauled train will be waiting to leave Cardiff to take you back to London Paddington, picking up at Bath. We will call at our earlier pick up stations to set down, concluding what promises to be a most memorable day.
