Sunday 1st March
London to Chur
Travel by Eurostar from London St. Pancras International or Ebbsfleet to Paris Gare du Nord. You have a short walk to Paris Gare de l’Est for your onward journey to Basel in Switzerland via Strasbourg. You change trains at Basel and use a Swiss Federal Railways (SBB) service to Chur via Zurich before checking in to your comfortable hotel in Chur. (D)

Monday 2nd March
Rhaetian Railway to Scuol-Tarasp by private Pullman coach; Ascent to the Motta Naluns Alpine plateau
Today you experience the famous Rhaetian Railway, travelling in a privately chartered 1930s Pullman car. Your luxurious Pullman coach has deep-cushioned armchairs and ornate Art Deco interiors to ensure a splendid journey and refined experience. Its Large windows offer outstanding views of the mountainous landscape as you travel on the rural line from Chur to Scuol-Tarasp, Switzerland’s easternmost railway station. En route you traverse the scenic Engadin Valley past the impressive Tarasp Castle. On arrival at Scuol you take the cableway to Motta Naluns, an elevated plateau 2142 metres above sea level, for panoramic views of the Swiss, Austrian and Italian Alps. After refreshments at the summit, you descend back to Scuol by cableway and return to Chur by SBB service train, dinner is served at your hotel. (B L D)

Tuesday 3rd March
Main line charter on the streamlined ‘Red Arrow’ to Linthal and scenic lake cruise on Walensee
Today you travel in Winston Churchill’s footsteps on SBB’s dedicated VIP train on a main line journey through Switzerland’s eastern Alps. From Chur you pass the Sargans fortress and speed along tranquil Lake Walensee, before traversing the mountainous Canton Glarus on the long rural branch line to Linthal. Your train is the streamlined 1939 ‘Red Arrow’ railcar, boasting luxurious interiors, open vestibules and spacious cabs. You’ll be able to sit next to the driver and experience his unique, forward-facing perspective. From the branch line terminus at Linthal you continue to the junction station of Ziegelbrücke, then on to the main line station at Unterterzen, next to the boat pier. You then enjoy a lunch cruise on Lake Walensee, one of Switzerland’s most spectacular mountain lakes, with views of the Toggenburg peaks. In the afternoon you return to Chur by SBB service train, dinner is served at your hotel. (B L D)

Wednesday 4th March
On the legendary ‘Transalpin’ Eurocity in SBB dome cars to Austria
This morning you board the renowned ‘Transalpin’ EuroCity train in Sargans for a breath-taking trip through Liechtenstein and western Austria on one of the most famous trans-Alpine journeys. Your train features both an SBB panoramic dome car and a spacious dining car, where refreshments are available throughout the trip. You’ll travel over the entire railway network of Liechtenstein between Buchs, Switzerland and Feldkirch, Austria, climbing over the Arlberg Pass, speeding through Tyrol and skirting the mountain villages of Kitzbühel and Zell am See, before arriving at the resort town of St. Johann im Pongau. Here, at the very centre of the Austrian Alps, you’ll spend the next two nights at a resort hotel. (B D)

Thursday 5th March
Mountain magnificence in St. Johann and Bad Gastein
Today is a leisurely morning with opportunity to explore the Austrian mountain village. In early afternoon you join your fellow travellers for an excursion to the nearby town of Bad Gastein, taking an OBB service train over the Tauernbahn both ways. In Bad Gastein, you journey on the spectacular aerial cableway to the summit of Mount Stubnerkogel located 2264 m above sea level, offering wonderful views. There’s time for light refreshments at the top, before returning back down to the Bad Gastein railway station, taking an OBB train back to St. Johann, where dinner will be served at the hotel. (B D)

Friday 6th March
Classic OBB trains through the Austrian Alps; private charters with historic vehicles on the Gmunden tramway and Vorchdorf local railway
Another tour highlight awaits today as you travel over two of the most scenic main line railways in Europe aboard comfortable, loco-hauled Intercity trains. Your journey leads over the Ennstalbahn and regularly appointed Salzkammergutbahn, which was frequently used by the Austrian Emperor Franz Josef en route to his vacation home in Bad Ischl. During this attractive train ride via Bischofshofen, Schladming and Stainach, you’ll enjoy views of towering peaks and tranquil lakes. In the early afternoon you arrive in the charming town of Gmunden, your base for the remainder of the holiday. In Gmunden, a vintage tramway originally dating from 1911 will pick you up at the station for a private charter ride over Austria’s shortest and steepest tram line to the lakeside promenade. There you change onto a different historic railcar dating from 1921 for the onward journey over the picturesque narrow gauge railway to Vorchdorf. Photo stops will be staged along the way. After returning to Gmunden, dinner will be served at the hotel. (B L D)

Saturday 7th March
Cruise on Lake Traunsee and ascent to Mount Grünberg
After a relaxing morning, you’ll have time to look around Gmunden’s historic old town or take a stroll along the lake. In the early afternoon you take the local cableway to the Grünberg observation point, for magnificent panoramic views of the lake and surrounding region. On return to Gmunden, you’ll enjoy a private charter on an elegantly appointed ship for a sunset cruise, served with complimentary coffee, tea and cake. Lake Traunsee is lined with historic castles, villas and dwarfed by imposing peaks at the southern end, such as Mount Feuerkogel, where the famous spy thriller ‘Where Eagles Dare’ was filmed. Dinner is served at your hotel. (B D)

Sunday 8th March
Cruise on Lake Attersee and Attersee narrow gauge railway
Another scenic cruise awaits today on Lake Attersee, one of Austria’s finest mountain lakes. Your cruise ship boasts a cosy indoor saloon and wide observation decks, where you can admire the open views and take pictures of the enchanting landscape. After your cruise you’ll have time to look around the lakeside towns of Attersee and Schörfling, before enjoying a private charter trip on the delightful Attersee narrow gauge railway, one of the few electrified metre gauge railways in Austria. After a fine day out, you return to Gmunden in the afternoon, where dinner is again served at the hotel to cap your refined and relaxing holiday. (B D)

Monday 9th March
Return to London by rail
After a short coach transfer from Gmunden to Salzburg, you travel by DB Intercity and Intercity Express trains via Munich and Frankfurt to Brussels, where you change onto a Eurostar high-speed service to London St. Pancras International. (B)
