Friday 18th September
Arrive in Lübeck; Sunset cruise
After a morning flight from London to Hamburg, you transfer to your elegant hotel in the historic city of Lübeck. After a welcome lunch you have time to sightsee in one of the finest small cities in Europe, famed for its Hanseatic heritage and architecture. In the evening you enjoy a sunset cruise on the River Trave aboard a vintage vessel and enjoy unspoiled views from the water of the city’s soaring spires and brick-built churches. (L)

Saturday 19th September
River Elbe steamboat cruise on the ‘Elbe’; River Alster steamboat cruise on ‘St. Georg’
Two of Germany’s unique and historic steamboats await you today for private charter cruises on both the wide River Elbe and the inland River Alster. First you rub shoulders with the great ocean liners and gigantic, sea-going container ships on a lunch-time sightseeing cruise aboard the unique steam-powered 1911 icebreaker ‘Elbe’. Full access to the boiler room and wheelhouse is included, as is a fresh-cooked lunch. After free time in the afternoon to look around Hamburg’s attractions, you embark for a private sightseeing tour aboard the 1876 heritage steam launch ‘St. Georg’, one of the oldest operational steamboats in the world. As the sun sets over Hamburg, you enjoy a sumptuous buffet dinner as you cruise. (B L D)

Sunday 20th September
Paddle Steamer Cruise on the River Schlei at Kappeln
Today you make your way north from Lübeck to Kappeln near the Danish border for an exquisite private charter cruise on the luxurious 1905 paddle steamer ‘Freya’, with full catering and complimentary drinks. Immerse yourself in the maritime charm of the ship, replete with mahogany wood, polished brass and stately saloons. The ‘Freya’ only visits the River Schlei once a year, so this is a unique opportunity to enjoy exclusive steam travel at an unusual location, with its tranquil, almost Scandinavian coastal landscapes. Monday 21st September
Lake Cruise in Schwerin; Baltic harbour cruise in Wismar
Today you transfer eastwards from Lübeck to the German state of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern and visit the regional capital city Schwerin. There you enjoy a private charter lunch cruise along the namesake lake and view the mid-19th-century fairy tale castle which sits on an island in the middle. After the cruise and a look around the town centre, you continue to the nearby seaside port city of Wismar, a UNESCO World Heritage site framed by stunning architecture and a picturesque harbour. There’s time to sightsee the city’s spacious squares and landmark churches before you enjoy an evening dinner harbour cruise aboard a stylish modern ship, replete with buffet, to watch the sun set. Afterwards you continue to nearby Rostock, where you’ll be based for the next 3 nights in a centrally located hotel in the heart of the Old Town. (B L D)

Tuesday 22nd September
Steam at the Molli Railway
Today you visit one of the iconic steam railways of Northern Germany, the 15.4-kilometre-long resort railway ‘Molli’. Famous for its street running section in Bad Doberan, this 900 mm gauge railway boasts lots of rugged German tank engines. You’ll have reserved seats for the northbound journey to Kühlingsborn on the Baltic Coast, where you can enjoy the stunning beaches before returning to Bad Doberan on any service train of your choice, using a complementary rover ticket issued for the day. Enjoy the railway at your pace, either by travelling on as many trains as possible or taking time to photograph along the lineside, especially within the tight streets of Bad Doberan. In the evening you return to Rostock by DB service train. (B)

Wednesday 23rd September
Steamboat Cruise on Lake Müritz in Waren
After a lie in at your hotel you take a late morning southbound service train from Rostock to nearby Müritz in the heart of the inland Mecklenburg lake district, another quaint town framed by red brick architecture and impressive churches. Today you enjoy a cruise on three different lakes and two connecting canals aboard the tall-stacked screw steamer ‘Europa’. A buffet lunch will be served during the trip. In late afternoon you return to Rostock for an evening in the city. (B L)

Thursday 24th September
Baltic Cruises around Barth and Stralsund  
More wonderful coastal cruises aboard privately chartered ships await today, as you first enjoy a lunch-time cruise from the resort town of Barth and Zingst around the Barther Bodden (lagoon), ideal for birdwatching and nature photography. After returning to Barth and a look around this charming town, you continue to nearby Stralsund. This historic city is another UNESCO World Heritage site and features some of the largest brick-built churches in the world. Later, you’ll get to see the main landmarks and nearby seaside landscape of the Baltic islands of Rügen and Hiddensee on another private charter cruise, replete with buffet dinner. You spend the next 2 nights at a stylish, centrally located hotel in Stralsund. (B L D)

Friday 25th September
Steam on the Island of Rügen; Steam to Göhren and Binz
Today famous German ‘Plandampf’ returns to centre stage, as you venture by service train to Putbus on the Island of Rügen and experience the island’s famous narrow-gauge line, nicknamed ‘Racing Roland’. This historic railway has a gauge of 750 mm and runs with a top speed of 30 km/h through the pastoral island landscape. The 24 km long line runs via Binz to the seaside terminus Göhren. After lunch you return to Putbus behind a different steam locomotive and then continue to Stralsund by service train via Bergen. A buffet dinner is served at your hotel in Stralsund. (B L D)

Saturday 26th September
Cruising along the Chalk Cliffs of Rügen
This morning you take a DB service train from Stralsund to Ostseebad Binz, the main line terminus station on Rügen. You get to explore this beautiful seaside resort, which is framed by sandy beaches and historic architecture from the early 20th century. Then you board a vintage vessel at the iconic Binz boardwalk for a coastal cruise on the Baltic Sea to the famed white Chalk Cliffs of Rügen. These are located on the northeastern tip of the island, near the port of Sassnitz. From the boat you’ll have the best possible view of the white cliffs. After another memorable cruise, you return to Stralsund by service train. Tonight you are free to explore the historic city centre and port district of Stralsund, all located in convenient proximity to your hotel. (B L)

Sunday 27th September
Return to London
You return to the UK with a direct transfer to Berlin and then a non-stop flight back to London. (B)
