Introducing Diesel Charters for 2026

We are pleased to announce that alongside our programme of steam train day trips , we will also be running a range of classic diesel charter trains this year.

A number of locomotives are planned, including Class 37s, Class 40s, Class 47s and Class 97s, with destinations set to include Aberystwyth, Blaenau Ffestiniog, Newquay, Penzance, Carne Point and Plymouth.

A memorable rail journey from Oxford via the Midlands and along the North Wales coast, before heading up the stunning Conwy Valley Line to the slate town of Blaenau Ffestiniog.

Winter Cumbrian Mountain Express

The Winter Cumbrian Mountain Express offers a wonderful winter escape, combining the comfort of main line travel with the romance of steam. Steam takes over for a memorable circular route through the Cumbrian Fells and along the breathtaking Settle & Carlisle line. With time to explore historic Carlisle and enjoy scenic views across the Pennines, it’s an experience you won't want to miss.

This popular steam train day trip runs from London Euston on Saturdays 7 and 28 February, and we’re also delighted to offer a Manchester Piccadilly departure on Saturday 31 January, steam-hauled throughout. Travelling via Shap to Carlisle and returning over the Settle & Carlisle line, it’s a truly memorable day out.

Celebrating 200 Years of the Modern Railway

This year marks a defining milestone in global transport history - the 200th anniversary of the Stockton & Darlington Railway. On 27 September 1825, a steam locomotive named Locomotion No. 1 pulled the first ever passenger carrying train on a public railway. That 26-mile journey between Shildon, Darlington and Stockton didn't just transform travel - it changed the world.

Railway 200 commemorates this revolutionary moment with a nationwide celebration of Britain’s proud railway heritage.

The Railway 200 Special

As part of the Railway 200 festivities, our two sold out special trains will recreate parts of the historic route this autumn - one from Carnforth on Saturday 27 September and another from London King’s Cross on Saturday 4 October. Both journeys include steam-hauled sections, a visit to Shildon and Stanhope, and a run along the scenic Weardale Railway.

This autumn, embark on a series of unforgettable steam journeys through some of Britain’s most scenic and historic rail routes. From coastal runs in Cornwall to dramatic climbs in the north and the return of steam to the Varsity Line, these four trips promise an atmospheric day out on the rails.

The Royal Duchy – Sunday 28 September

Departing from Bristol Temple Meads, The Royal Duchy heads southwest behind steam, climbing to Whiteball Summit before descending towards Exeter. From Exeter, the train follows the scenic Exe Estuary to the coast, then travels along the iconic sea wall at Dawlish before powering over steep gradients to Plymouth.

Passengers may explore Plymouth’s seafront or continue to Par in Cornwall. Here, buses take you to the harbour village of Charlestown or the coastal town of Fowey. After a break of several hours, the train returns steam-hauled to Bristol.

The Cumbrian Mountain Express – Saturday 11 October

One of our most popular steam train day trips, The Cumbrian Mountain Express, combines electric and steam traction for a scenic circular route from London to Carlisle and back via the Settle & Carlisle line.

Steam takes over at Carnforth for a climb over Shap, followed by time to explore Carlisle. The return features dramatic scenery, tall viaducts, and tunnels as we pass over the fells before continuing south towards London.

The Varsity Explorer – Saturday 25 October

On Saturday, 25 October, steam returns to the newly reopened Bicester–Bletchley section of the East West Rail route for the first time since 1967. The Varsity Explorer will traverse this historic line as part of a scenic steam-hauled journey from Slough to Chester, crossing Bletchley Flyover and travelling through the heart of England.

Passengers can enjoy the afternoon in Chester’s historic centre, with time to explore its cathedral, city walls and riverside walks. A true steam train experience across a newly revived route.

The Chiltern Explorer – Saturday 1 November

On Saturday, 1 November, The Chiltern Explorer departs Manchester behind a vintage steam train for a picturesque journey south via Crewe and Rugby, joining the East West Rail line at Bletchley.

Passengers may alight in Oxford or continue to Reading before the return leg retraces this unique route. A rare chance to enjoy steam travel through the heart of England.

Travel Reopened Routes by Steam - First Time Since 1967!

This autumn, don’t miss the chance to enjoy unforgettable steam train day trips over a historic route recently reopened. For the first time since 1967, steam locomotives will travel the long-closed Varsity Line corridor between Oxford and Cambridge, offering a truly unique journey steeped in railway history.

The Varsity Explorer

On Saturday, 25 October, hop aboard The Varsity Explorer for an unforgettable steam-hauled adventure from Slough to Chester. This special trip takes you along the newly restored Bicester-Bletchley section of the East West Rail route - a landmark moment as steam returns to this track for the first time in many years. The journey begins on the Great Western main line, with stops at Reading and Oxford, before joining the reinstated Varsity route. Passengers will cross the newly reopened Winslow station and the impressive Bletchley Flyover, then speed north along the West Coast Main Line to Chester. There, you can enjoy a relaxed afternoon exploring the city’s historic streets, magnificent cathedral and scenic riverside walks.

The Chiltern Explorer

Then, on Saturday, 1 November, The Chiltern Explorer departs from Manchester for a steam-hauled journey southwards via Crewe and Rugby, before joining the newly opened Varsity section at Bletchley. The route continues through Winslow, Bicester Village, and Oxford Parkway, arriving at Oxford - the famed ‘City of Dreaming Spires.’ Passengers can choose to explore Oxford or continue on to Reading, home to rich history, fascinating museums, and Abbey ruins. The return trip retraces this rare route back to Manchester.

THE RAILWAY TOURING COMPANY WINS TOP TRAVEL AWARD

The Railway Touring Company has been named the ‘Best Small Travel Company for Rail Holidays’ in the 2024 British Travel Awards. Travelling consumers cast over 1.2 million votes in the annual awards with winners announced on November 19.

Remarkably, it is the fifth top award in a row for Kings Lynn-based The Railway Touring Company. In 2019, 2022 and 2023 they were also voted ‘Best Small Travel Company for Rail Holidays’ and in 2019 ‘Best Small Specialist Interest Holiday Company’. Awards were not held in 2021 due to the pandemic.

Established in 1997, The Railway Touring Company research and craft holiday itineraries encompassing the great railway journeys of the UK, Europe and beyond and run over 80 main line steam day trips in the UK each year.

“It is incredible to receive this accolade once again this year,” commented Kelly Osborne, The Railway Touring Company’s MD. “Thanks to all our wonderful customers for voting for us. Also, a big thank you to everyone at The Railway Touring Company and our partners across the world who work so hard to make our rail-themed holidays so memorable.”

Railway Touring Company Scoops Top Travel Award

We are pleased to announce that we were named as ‘Best Small Travel Company for Rail Holidays’ at the British Travel Awards on November 28. It is the third year in a row that we have won this prestigious award.

Established in 1997, we provide rail-themed holidays in the UK, Europe and worldwide, as well as organising over 80 main-line steam day trips each year.

Voted for by the travelling consumer, the British Travel Awards are an annual event. Travellers are asked to vote on customer service, product offering and the best holidays across various categories.

Commenting on this year’s win, our MD Kelly Osborne said, “It’s a tremendous accolade for the team who work so hard to research, plan and lead unique holidays combining great rail journeys and interesting destinations. It has been quite a year for us here at The Railway Touring Company. The National Railway Museum selected us as its partner to run main-line steam excursions to mark famous locomotive 60103 Flying Scotsman’s Centenary.

Flying Scotsman in Scotland

Flying Scotsman completes Centenary tours in Scotland

Four main line steam journeys with 60103 Flying Scotsman went ahead from Edinburgh Waverley on October 7, 8 and 10, despite adverse weather conditions. Organised in conjunction with the National Railway Museum, the trains gave passengers the opportunity to travel Scotland’s main lines with the famous locomotive during its Centenary year.

Flying Scotsman’s tours in Scotland finished on Tuesday, October 10, when the one-hundred-year-old locomotive hauled our ‘Aberdeen Flyer’ from Edinburgh Waverley to Aberdeen and back.

On Saturday, October 7, ‘The Highland Express’, which was due to be hauled from Edinburgh to Inverness by diesel and then by Flying Scotsman on the return, could not run on the Highland Line as the line was closed due to adverse weather. We worked with Network Rail Scotland through Friday evening to re-route this train from Edinburgh to Aberdeen hauled by Flying Scotsman on both the outward and return.

On Sunday, October 8, ‘The Fife Circulars’ in the morning and the afternoon were able to run with Flying Scotsman at their head.

Commenting on the journeys with 60103 Flying Scotsman, our MD Kelly Osborne said: “It was a challenging few days for all involved in these special Centenary main line excursions and we want to thank everyone who enabled us to continue with the planned trains. The support crew and engineering team involved with Flying Scotsman from Riley & Son (E) Ltd Locomotive Engineers did an amazing job working tirelessly.

“Our operating team West Coast Railways have, as always, provided us with the opportunity to deliver these wonderful steam hauled experiences for our customers.

“The onboard volunteer stewards and staff, along with the wonderful team from Gravy Train Catering, worked hard to ensure our customers were well looked after on board.

“We want to thank all our customers. Their support, understanding and appreciation for the efforts made have been much welcomed by the team.

“Our thanks also to Network Rail Scotland, Network Rail and the National Railway Museum for supporting us.”

These trains took 980 passengers on a journey to remember as they travelled through scenic Scotland. Steaming across the famous Forth Bridge, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, was a highlight of each tour.

St Blazey turntable back in action for Flying Scotsman

The Railway Touring Company would like to say a Big Thank You to MPower Kernow and all involved in refurbishing the St Blazey turntable in time for our Royal Duchy on April 30, 2023, which was hauled by 60103.

Grade II* listed, the St Blazey turntable is an important part of Cornwall’s industrial heritage, but many feared that it would never operate again.

Thanks to MPower, on April 30, 2023, Flying Scotsman’s Centenary year, the turntable was ship shape and in good working order, so that 60103 could be turned for The Royal Duchy return journey.

Now removed from the Heritage at Risk Register, the turntable will facilitate steam on Cornwall’s railways including our Royal Duchy trains this year, which will run again in July, August and September, and into the future.

Planning began in October last year when we approached MPower to ask if the turntable could be made ready by April 30 for world famous 60103 Flying Scotsman.

MPower rose to the challenge!

Refurbishment works
A social enterprise dedicated to providing training for science, technology, engineering and maths (STEM), MPower agreed to drive the refurbishment forward. Between February 16 and April 30, 2023, the main turntable repairs were completed on budget in the remarkable time frame of ten weeks.

The turntable ‘bridge’ section was lifted using large jacks, allowing the main carriage components to be removed by crane and dispatched to local contractors for grit blasting. Once that was complete, the fabrication and riveting teams wasted no time in stripping and rebuilding the carriages with large amounts of new steel and around 300 new rivets. Further steel and riveting work was required on the main bridge section.

Cranes returned to St Blazey in late March to reassemble the main turntable components. These were followed by the drive unit, walkways and remaining ‘small’ components. New track was welded and installed on the turntable by the Network Rail track team on April 21, followed by a full function test using a modern diesel loco, a 126 tonne Class 66. This was the key when it was clear that the turntable would be ready for its illustrious guest, Flying Scotsman, just a week later.

Volunteers and contractors alike worked long shifts to finish the turntable repairs and prepare the site to make it safe for visitors, along with hundreds of hours spent behind the scenes.

Throughout April, Network Rail’s volunteer teams also spent four weeks working their way through repairs required to bring the access track from the Newquay Branch to the turntable up to a suitable standard for steam locomotives.

On the big day, April 30, when gleaming Flying Scotsman arrived, the turntable performed faultlessly!

Kelly Osborne, The Railway Touring Company’s MD, said, “Congratulations to MPower and Network Rail for spearheading this initiative to ensure that Flying Scotsman could be turned at St Blazey. The turntable refurbishment is excellent news for steam operations and opens up opportunities to run more steam hauled trains on Cornwall’s railways.

“It is particularly tremendous that MPower used this project as an opportunity to provide valuable work experience for trainees with Special Educational Needs and for 18-25 year olds Not in Employment Education or Training.

“Well done and many thanks to all those who sponsored this project and to those who worked hard to make it happen.”

Daytrips hauled by Flying Scotsman launched for 2023

We have announced a series of 2023 mainline steam tour dates with 60103 Flying Scotsman. The days out in the company of the world’s most famous steam locomotive are part of Flying Scotsman’s centenary celebrations organised by the National Railway Museum.

The National Railway Museum’s Flying Scotsman centenary plans were launched with an appearance of the iconic locomotive at Kings Cross Station on Friday, October 14, to tie in with the station’s own 170 ^th anniversary. The Museum revealed a calendar of Flying Scotsman events for 2023 on their website.

Officially the first steam locomotive to reach 100mph, 60103 Flying Scotsman was built at Doncaster in 1922. Designed by Sir Nigel Gresley and built for the LNER, the locomotive was named ‘Flying Scotsman’ in 1923 and continued in regular service until 1963 and then later in preservation. Today, it is owned by the National Railway Museum in York and is operated and maintained by Riley & Son (E) Ltd.

We are delighted to be working with the National Railway Museum to put Flying Scotsman through its paces on the mainline in 2023. Nine mainline dates have been launched with more to follow. Dates announced so far are:

The National Railway Museum’s Centenary programme is packed with events and activities, which people can now explore and book online. During 2023, as well as days out on the mainline, Flying Scotsman can be seen at free static events at the National Railway Museum and other locations. The iconic loco will also be in action at a number of heritage railways around the UK and at Locomotion in Shildon.

In addition, one of the UK’s best loved authors Michael Morpurgo has written a new children’s book Flying Scotsman and the Best Birthday Ever to mark the anniversary.

The Flying Scotsman Centenary Programme has been generously supported by Hornby and has been made possible thanks to the National Heritage Memorial Fund.

Beautiful Gorlitz, Germany

Görlitz, Germany

Located right along the River Neisse and the Polish frontier, Görlitz is the easternmost city in Germany. It also boasts an exceptionally well preserved old town with soaring spires, red rooftops, cobblestone streets and spacious squares. Having been spared much damage during World War II and radiating a ton of Gilded Age charm, Görlitz has become a very popular filming location for major Hollywood movies as well as television productions. These circumstances have given rise to the popular nickname "Görliwood" and indeed such well known films as "The Grand Budapest Hotel" with Ralph Fiennes, "The Reader" with Kate Winslet or "Monuments Men" with George Clooney were all filmed on location in Görlitz, using the city's beautiful architecture as the perfect backdrop. Indeed the city is frequently used to stand in for larger European cities for period pieces, including the depiction of Berlin at the turn of the 20th century.

Görlitz is also a city without borders and passing over one of the three river bridges to its sister city Zgorzelec, Poland is seamless and highly enjoyable, offering great views of the landmark cathedral. The history extends to the elegant railway station and pedestrianized city centre streets, where early 20th century arcades and stately public buildings frame the scene. The Hauptbahnhof is noteworthy for its elegant terminal building and arched canopy over the platforms, all dating from 1917.

Aside from the cultural and historical attractions in Görlitz, the area beholds appeal for railway enthusiasts, given the stunning, stone-arched cross-border viaduct to Poland, which towers high above the river valley and first opened in 1847, during the heyday of 19th century railway pioneering. Conveniently, the narrow steam railways at Bad Muskau and Zittau are also in close proximity to Görlitz, making it the city at the crossroads of Saxony and Silesia and the ideal base for holidays in Eastern Germany. Görlitz also features a pocket-sized tram network with various historic Duewag and Tatra vehicles that make getting around easy. Salzburg and Salzkammergut

As the land of Mozart, the Sound of Music and marzipan chocolate balls, Salzburg is a world famous destination and a truly charming medieval city with an impressive hilltop fortress, framed by Alpine peaks. cobblestone alleys, soaring spires and spacious squares actually give Salzburg's old town much flair and sophistication. Just as delightful as the city is the nearby hinterland and the Austrian lakes district known as the Salzkammergut. This pastoral area takes its name from the centuries-old tradition of salt mining and is dotted by over a dozen small yet spectacular lakes. The Wolfgangsee, Hallstättersee and Zeller See are probably the best known bodies of water here, not least because they are home to such famous mountain villages as Zell am See, Hallstatt and St. Wolfgang. The lakes also form a delightful contrast to the steep mountain peaks or green panoramic hills that surround them. Indeed the famous Schafbergbahn rack railway is located in St. Wolfgang, one of Austria's three mountain railways with steam traction and ancient rack tank locomotives dating from the late 19th Century.

Our relaxing holiday to Orkney spends four nights at a centrally located hotel in Kirkwall, within close proximity to the pedestrianised High Street and the waterfront. In addition to the Neolithic landmarks, the tour visits the Cliffs of Yesnaby on the west coast of the main island as well as the Brough of Birsay to the north. Amazing Arran

Located southwest of Glasgow, off the coast of Ayrshire, the Isle of Arran has often been described as 'Scotland in Miniature'. Spectacular Shetland

Since 2016 we have been running scenic tours to the northernmost islands in Great Britain. Indeed, Shetland is closer than you think; just a train ride to Aberdeen along the East Coast Main Line and then an overnight ferry with NorthLink to Lerwick. Naturally, we take things a bit more casually and well-paced, giving you time to see the Granite City of Aberdeen for an overnight stay on the outward journey and historic St. Andrew's for one night at a fancy boutique hotel on the way back. Additional bonus attractions on the Scottish mainland include steam at the Caledonian Railway of Brechin and Robert Falcon Scott's arctic vessel RRS Discovery in Dundee.

Magical Harz Mountains

Located in the heart of Germany, just behind the former East-West border, the Harz Mountains combine a fairytale landscape consisting of deep woods, rolling hills, lonely fields and hilltop castles with majestic steam locomotives.

Storming up mighty Mount Brocken behind a rugged 2-10-2 tank engine or an archaic 0-4-4-0 Mallet is on the Bucket List of most railway enthusiasts. What makes this destination so appealing for first-time visitors or seasoned veterans alike is the intensive pattern of daily, year-round operations. Known as 'Plandampf' in Germany, the Harz narrow gauge railways operate public steam trains on a vast network measuring 140 km in size and range. In reality, the Harz system is the amalgamation of three separate sub-sections, the highlight of which is the spiralling line to the summit of Mount Brocken, Northern Germany's highest point at an elevation of 1141 m above sea level. On a clear day, the 360 degree views from the top are breathtaking, but even with limited or no visibility at all, the summit is a stunning location with intense pride of place.

Filming or photographing the arriving steam trains at the summit station can be particularly rewarding, as is listening to the sound of the hard-working machines, as they battle the gradients.

Best of all, the Harz Mountains are a location for all four seasons, although the colours of autumn or deep snow of winter are the most dramatic. For these reasons we are always keen to offer travellers multiple departures to the Harz Mountains at various times of the year. To see just how tough winter can be on the rolling stock and steam locomotives in the Harz Mountains, check out this clip of the famous "Frozen Locomotive" 99 234 at the Brocken Summit in January 2019.

Thankfully, the locomotive was back in traffic just a few weeks later and did not sustain any significant damage from the ice.
