UK Tours by Steam Train
We have some exciting new tours in our UK programme providing a fascinating variety of destinations for your holiday. Each one has its distinctive characteristics which make it something special for those who join in. We have new tours to the “Heart of Scotland”, the “Far North & the Orkneys” and the two areas of England that attract the most visitors - the Lake District and the West Country.
The “Heart of Scotland” is based in the cities of Edinburgh and Glasgow and includes visits to Heritage Railways and cultural attractions such as St. Andrews and Stirling Castle. There are also cruises by steam boat on Loch Katrine and the River Clyde to the Isle of Bute. The “Far North & Orkney” is an apt description of where it goes and provides a rare opportunity to visit the Orkney Islands with an organised tour. It visits some of the most extraordinary destinations in Northern Europe during the wonderful “White Nights” when it never gets completely dark. On the mainland there are trips on Heritage Railways in the Far North that are very much ‘off the beaten track’.
The Lake District of northern England is famous not only for its lakes, but also its forests and mountains (or fells). It lies entirely within the county of Cumbria and has a National Park which includes the highest mountain (Scaefell Pike) and the longest lake (Windermere) in England. We shall stay in a hotel beside Lake Windermere for the duration of the “English Lake District” tour and explore the area by train and boat. This is the finest way to ‘get alongside’ and appreciate the splendour of this area of outstanding natural beauty.
The “West Country Explorer” visits the counties of Somerset, Devon & Cornwall in a region traditionally famous for its production of cider, clotted cream, and pasties. Highlights include travelling by train along and visiting the famous Dawlish sea wall; St. Michaels Mount; Land’s End; a paddle steamer cruise on the River Dart; and staying on the English Riviera. There are rides on steam trains at an interesting variety of Heritage Railways. Regular tours continue to appear in our programme because of their popularity. A majority of them are in Scotland because its scenic beauty, fascinating heritage and culture, has an unrivalled appeal. The “Cock 'O The North”, “Western Isles”, and “Summer Highlander” are six, nine and five day tours respectively. The “West Highlander Steam Express” is a four day tour by specially chartered steam train. This provides an unrivalled opportunity to view the spectacular scenery of the West Highlands. England and Wales have not been forgotten. North Wales has a beauty and charm all of its own which can be best appreciated by joining our popular “Snowdonia and Northern Fells” tour. This tour combines a trip by special steam train over the spectacular Settle & Carlisle Railway in northern England with an assortment of different railway journeys in North Wales.
If you have not yet had the experience of touring by train then our UK tours provide an excellent introduction. There is nothing quite like discovering the beauty of the UK countryside from the comfort of a train. All the arrangements are made for you so that you can sit back, relax, and enjoy to the full the programme of the tour. All you have to do is to decide which of our fabulous tours you wish to join and then make a telephone call or go on-line to make your booking. It could not be simpler.
