This seasonal day trip by steam train provides a unique opportunity to visit either the historic city of Winchester or the Wiltshire cathedral city of Salisbury.
It starts from London Victoria station and picks up more passengers at Staines and Woking before continuing to Winchester. We then travel via Southampton and Romsey to Salisbury. Both destinations will be holding their Christmas Markets to get you into the Christmas sprit.
Our train leaves London Victoria station in the morning behind our splendidly restored steam locomotive. We pass through Clapham Junction, cross the Thames at Barnes Bridge, and continue to a stop at Staines to pick up more passengers. We join the South Western Main Line (SWML) at Byfleet Junction, and then stop for further passengers at Woking. We leave the Salisbury line at Worting Junction and take the line to Eastleigh. We will pause at Winchester to set down passengers wishing to visit the Christmas Market, set around the historic Cathedral quarters.
We now continue towards Eastleigh and Southampton. There will be an opportunity for some fast running along the L&SWR main line, with Union of South Africa allowed to run at its maximum speed. After passing through Southampton, we will take the Romsey line at Redbridge and head for Salisbury. We pass through Hampshire and enter Wiltshire just after Dean. We will now have the rest of the afternoon in Salisbury to visit the city and the Christmas Market.
Salisbury Christmas Market transforms the heart of this beautiful medieval cathedral city into a winter wonderland with its authentic German Market-style wooden chalets and festive events. Proudly returning to the historic Guildhall Square for its 7th consecutive year, the Salisbury Christmas Market in 2018 will see the return of many award-winning exhibitors and products, with choices ranging from intricate jewellery to beautifully crafted handmade furniture, succulent mince pies to luxurious all-flavoured liqueurs.
Our train leaves Salisbury late afternoon, hauled by our steam locomotive, and stops at Winchester to pick up those passengers who chose to alight there. It stops at the same stations as on the outward journey, to set down passengers.
Santa and his Elves will be visiting the train during the day and distributing presents to all children travelling on the train. Please let us know your child’s age when booking.
