We will also travel over the Peak Rail heritage line between Matlock and Rowsley. Time will be available to visit the Peak Rail attractions or to spend time in Matlock. Apart from running at main line speeds through the Fens, and along sections of the East Coast Main Line, there are many miles of more leisurely secondary routes with a high scenic content.

Our journey commences at Norwich in the morning, steam hauled by locomotive No. 70013 Oliver Cromwell where we take the line to Ely, calling at Wymondham, Attleborough and across the Fens to the market town of Thetford. We then make a further pick up at Brandon before we bypass Ely to make our way to Peterborough, our final pick up point.

We now join the East Coast Main Line to Grantham a market town in the South Kesteven district of Lincolnshire. The town is best known as the birthplace of former Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher, and the place where Isaac Newton went to school. Entering Nottinghamshire we continue westwards passing through Bingham, a market town situated nine miles east of the city of Nottingham.

Our route now takes us from Nottingham to Trent Junction where we shall take the line to Derby via Long Eaton and Spondon. We shall now follow the Derwent Valley line through Belper as far as Ambergate where we join the Matlock branch. In Midland Railway days, the line through Matlock was formerly the main line to Manchester Central, which closed as a through route in 1968. We follow the picturesque valley of the River Derwent and pass through the mill towns of Cromford and Matlock Bath to Matlock.

At Matlock, passengers have the option of alighting from our train or continuing with our special train along the Peak Rail line through Darley Dale to Rowsley. We shall return from Rowsley later in the afternoon steam hauled, picking up at Matlock those passengers who have been visiting the town. Our return route to Norwich is once again via Derby, Nottingham, Grantham and Peterborough, calling at our morning pick up stations to set down. On arrival at Norwich, we will reluctantly have to say goodbye to our steam locomotive at journey’s end.
