Scarborough or York one way to London Paddington with the Flying Scotsman from York.
A rare opportunity is on offer to travel behind the world famous ‘Flying Scotsman’ steam locomotive on a one-way journey from York to London via a scenic route that cuts across country from Yorkshire to the Thames Valley. Those joining at Scarborough will have the added bonus of steam-haulage behind Merchant Navy ‘Pacific’ No. 35018 ‘British India Line’ as far as York, where Flying Scotsman takes over.
We head south-west away from Scarborough and follow the Derwent Valley towards York, hauled by 35018 ‘British India Line’. At York we change motive power to 60103 ‘Flying Scotsman’ and enjoy a fast run along the ECML to Doncaster.
Threading your way through the South Yorkshire industrial town of Rotherham and the outskirts of Sheffield, you head past the crooked spire at Chesterfield, to follow the scenic and fertile Derwent Valley on the edge of the Peak District through Belper to Derby.
Leaving the railway town behind, you follow the former Midland Railway’s main line and head south along the valley of the Trent through Burton on Trent and Tamworth to the outskirts of Birmingham. Running via Bordesley Junction, you join the Great Western Railway’s main line from Birmingham Snow Hill at Bordesley and continue through Tyseley and head southwards through Solihull. You continue through Warwick and Leamington Spa in a south-easterly direction towards Banbury. The town is famed for Banbury cakes – similar to Eccles cakes but oval in shape.
After Banbury, the route follows the meandering Oxford Canal as you head for Oxford, the ‘City of Dreaming Spires’. You continue south towards Didcot where you will to join the GW main line from Bristol. We will run through the attractive Thames Valley to Reading where we now follow Brunell’s high speed main line to London Paddington where we aim to arrive in the Capital in the early evening.
Please note the tour does not include travel to York or Scarborough or back from London to York or Scarborough, you will need to make your own arrangements for this.
